How to Use Google Analytics to Find Your Best Clients

You don’t need to be a numbers person to grow your business. But you do need to know what your numbers are telling you.

If you’re a coach, consultant or service-based business owner, chances are you’re doing a lot of things to market your offers. You’re posting, emailing, networking, and tweaking your website. But are those efforts actually working? Or… are you just guessing?

In this episode of the Master Your Business Podcast, marketing strategist Matt Lubaroff shares how to use Google Analytics 4 to get clear, confident answers about your marketing. Matt is StoryBrand Certified, HubSpot Certified, GA4 Certified, and 100% obsessed with uncovering the truth behind what works in your marketing.

He believes in simple, strategic tools that show you what's driving revenue, and what's not.

“Money is too scarce. Customers are too important to rely on your gut alone.” – Matt Lubaroff

What Even Are Marketing Metrics?

Marketing metrics are the data that help you understand whether your marketing is moving the needle. They tell the story behind your:

  • Website traffic
  • Visitor behaviour
  • Content performance
  • Conversion rates
  • Channel effectiveness

Unfortunately, most service providers are watching the wrong numbers. Vanity metrics like likes, views, and total traffic might feel good, but they rarely lead to more clients.

The real magic? It’s in understanding which actions lead people from "just looking" to "I’m ready to work with you."

Neil Patel, a leading voice in digital marketing, consistently reminds us that "what gets measured gets managed." If you want to grow, you need to know which levers to pull. Data tells you exactly that.

Top of Funnel Traffic vs. Right-Fit Clients

Matt uses this example: Imagine a thousand people walk into your store. Nine hundred and ninety nine of them look around and walk out. Just one makes a purchase.

Now imagine a different scenario: Only 100 walk in, but 90 buy.

Same store. Way better result.

That’s the difference between volume and relevance. And it’s where most small business owners go wrong. They chase numbers instead of tracking quality traffic that converts.

With GA4, you can:

  • See where your best traffic is coming from
  • Compare social, email, and SEO effectiveness
  • Track engagement, not just clicks
  • Find content that attracts the right people

This is the same philosophy Sally Howard embraced in her SEO journey, which you can read more about in this blog post.

How to Know if Your Content Is Actually Working

If you’re creating content, sending newsletters, or publishing blog posts, you want that effort to pay off. But how do you know if it is?

Matt suggests:

  • Using Google Search Console to see which keywords people search before they click on your site
  • Checking scroll depth to see how much of your blog or page visitors actually read
  • Monitoring engaged sessions (GA4’s new version of bounce rate)
  • Tracking goal completions for forms, downloads, meetings or purchases

If a page has tons of traffic but people aren’t sticking around? That’s a red flag.

Matt even shares how he removed high-traffic blog posts that brought in bad-fit visitors, because traffic that doesn’t convert hurts more than it helps.

The 3 Most Important Website Metrics To Track

Let’s keep it simple. Matt focuses on these three:

1. Traffic by Channel

Forget total traffic. Matt only looks at traffic generated by intentional marketing efforts: SEO, social media, email, and ads. Not random direct traffic.

2. Engagement Rate

Bounce rate is dead. GA4 now tracks engagement rate. This tells you:

  • How long people stay on your site
  • Whether they scroll or click
  • If they visit more than one page

3. Conversion Rate

What action do you want people to take? Book a call? Download a freebie? Buy now? Define it and track it.

Matt sets up clear conversions inside GA4 so you know exactly what’s working.

What to Delegate and What to Track Yourself

The data can feel overwhelming. That’s why Matt suggests:

  • Delegating the setup of GA4 and dashboards to a pro
  • Delegating day-to-day content creation if needed
  • But keeping responsibility for understanding what's working

Ask your team:

What’s working? What’s not? What are we doing more of next month?

You don’t need to do it all. But you do need to stay connected to your numbers.

Tools to Make It Easy

Google Analytics 4 has a learning curve. But the tools are powerful. And free.

Final Thought

Numbers tell stories. When you know how to read the story, you get to write the next chapter of your business with clarity and confidence.

Google Analytics isn’t just for big brands. It’s for smart businesses. And smart business owners know:

"Creating good stuff and using data to know it’s working is frickin’ fun."
